The solenoid only applies power to the starter when engaged. It is the rest of the wiring that does not shut the power off. I would second JMOR's suggestion.

If you're using a starter solenoid with only one small post, then it should be connected only to the starter button circuit. There should be no ignition wires on it..As the 12v front coil usually has an internal resistance of 2 ohms, and the oem ballast resistor is 1.7 ohms hot, that gets you 3.7 ohms total resistance. 14.5 volts/3.7 ohms = 3.9 amps.
